BOOKS (a selection)
"WORKING AT KRUT" as PDF
The last event of the
Vienna exhibition in June 2009 was the presentation of "WORKING
AT KRUT".
"FLOREY´S AUGENSPIEGELBLICK"
Now the blissful folly of making books has led me into a world new to
me: to use the handwritten manuscript of the composer Wolfgang Florey´s
"Augenspiegelblick" (8 movements for violoncello solo written
for Susan Salm),
translated as "The reflection in your eyes", as "text",
and the extended and beautiful notes the author wrote as an underlying
sub-text.
"LEHNWÖRTER"
as PDF
LEHNWÖRTER is a painters book with original drawings and a
gouache.
The literary texts are in German and play with quotes borrowed from Jean
Paul, Lichtenberg, Herbeck, Nestroy and London Transport.
"FARBENSPIELE"
The catalogue
of the show "Farbenspiele"
of my artists books in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Munich), can be
ordered directly from the Bayerische
Staatsbibliothek or, like several of my other publications, from the
book-shop of the "Vienna
Secession"
"MEIN STUNDENBUCH" as PDF ("My
Book of Hours")
is, as its namesake´s, actually a painted book.
Handwritten and illuminated by 20 gouaches, it is an original work.
It distinguishes itself from the traditional book of hours by its text:
this unholy passage through a year I wrote myself, it contains therefore
the observations of an anarchic utopian, determined in his love for this
world.
I worked on this book from 1993 - 2003. Given its singular existence it
had to be converted into a CD-ROM (to be accessible), beautifully rendered
by Anselm Mueller.
"PASSING THROUGH" as PDF
is a cassette containing 20 photographs reproduced as fine art laser prints
and an essay (in English), published in 21 numbered and signed copies.
It is a belated "crystallisation" of memories connected to the
enchanted, but since lost, park at Leopoldskron (Max Reinhardt´s
fairytale-villa near Salzburg).
The original photographs, taken in 1961-62, still exist in a single set
and were used for the digitalization - the negatives have been lost in
time.
The anthology "Die Freiheit, aufzubrechen wohin er will"
("The freedom to depart to wherever one wishes" [Hoelderlin])
is a perfect example of the books serving texts by other authors: it is
my personal anthology of literature and decisive in my understanding of
life.
It contains works by Gutenbrunner, Kafka, Pope, Brecht, Schoenwiese, Benn,
Hoelderlin, Jean Paul, Nestroy, Adler and Buber, each one accompanied
by an aquatint etching, all in their original language, with the English
texts translated into German by myself.
The anthology has been locked into a box (made by the eminent bookbinder
Peter Gruenauer) appearing to be a prison the pages try to escape
from.
Printed in 40 signed and numbered copies, it represents my concept of
art as a declaration of man´s independence.
